QRS-15 Tracking Streamer

QRS-15 Tracking Streamer

This tracking streamer is well-suited for model rockets with PRESENCE, as well as mid-power rockets flying on reloadable composite motors. At this size, we’re well past “normal” size and weight for streamers as primary recovery. Expect people to say: “You’re sure you’re going to recover THAT on a streamer? REALLY?” They won’t believe it until you show ’em how it’s done. In dual-deploy mode, we use a QRS-15 to recover J and K powered rockets. In primary mode, we use it in our Painkiller Micro.
The QRS-15 tracking streamer features the high power trimmings. It features both the triple-thick shock cord tunnel as well as brass grommets for use with quick-clips or ties. Like the rest of our streamers, it is made from a single piece of durable, yet lightweight, ripstop Nylon. All hems are double-rolled; there are no exposed edges of fabric to fray.

True story: we had a “sub-optimal” flight with this streamer on-board. The apogee deployment occurred VERY late –when the rocket was in a ballistic fall. I thought, for sure, the model was done for. At approximately 1,000 feet, the QRS-15 Tracking Streamer FINALLY deployed. It slowed the rocket from the harrowing 250 feet/second it had achieved in free-fall to the expected 65 feet/second until main deployment seven hundred feet later, proving well beyond any doubt that streamer descent rates are predictable figures, and that while the material is lightweight, it’s strong enough even for fast deployment.

The QRS-15 Tracking Streamer packs very small for its unfurled size, but to ensure a nominal deployment, we recommend packing into a tube no smaller than 33mm (BT 55) without a pilot.

QRS-15 is far larger than most other streamers out there, and can be used on payloads recovering from the upper end of MPR on a BLS-30 up to level 2-power recovering on a  ALS-72 Advanced High Power Main Canopy.  If using as an apogee event in a dual-deploy rocket (secondary recovery), we recommend a shock cord of at least 50′, with the streamer mounted at least 17′ from end. This will help ensure the main is deployed into clear air.
